Microplastics.

Microplastics in our oceans is a well-known issue nowadays. But did you know that everyone is in part responsible for a consistent amout of this plastic? Around 60% of our clothes contain polyester fibres. During a washing cycle in our washing machine a part of these fibers are shed and flushed into wastewater. Most of the wastewater treatment plants are not able to filter these particles. This is how microplastics land up in rivers and, finally, in oceans.

Garments ending up in landfill and nature.

At the end of the garments’ lives, the vast majority will be burnt, ends up in landfill or is disposed accidentally in nature. During incineration, the fabrics may release harmful vapours, and if not correctly filtered damage human’s health. In landfill synthetics do not disappear, because they do not biodegrade. The same happens when left in nature.

The fast fashion’s mantra is to consume bulks of garments, use them two to three times and then throw them away. This business model contributes to this waste problem in an exponential way. It depletes our precious resources and has forgotten to use them in a responsible way.

Non renewable and toxic.

Plastic is an outcome of processing oil, a resource that will soon no longer be available on this planet. The extraction process of oil not only is causing severe environmental damages to the areas where it is extracted, but also to all those that are directly or indirectly involved with its depletion. Moreover, plastics are often processed with additives to give them specific properties. These chemicals are extremely toxic and may cause serious health issues to the human beings that use them.
